May 4, 2009

Dear students, parents, and friends,

We are near the end of our season and our new Summer Term is fast approaching.  As this is the first time we are offering a full summer of LEB programming, understandably, many questions have arisen.

Questions:

  1. How important is it for me to continue taking class over the summer?
  2. If I take advantage of the classes offered at Mercyhurst, who do I write my check to?
  3. I am planning to take the Ballet and Modern classes offered to me every MWF during June and then again in August for the low cost of $135 per three (3) week session.  What are my options for the month of July?
  4. I am currently enrolled in Intermediate I, can I take advantage of the classes at Mercyhurst?
  5. I am currently enrolled in Intermediate II, do I have to take the classes at Mercyhurst?
  6. Do I need to register for classes offered at LEB for the summer if I am already a student?
  7. When do I register and pay tuition?
  8. When will I receive my level placement letter?
  9. I have been in Pre-Pointe for at least one year and I am at least 11 years old.  Will I receive a Pointe letter?
  10. I will be in and out of town during the summer and do not know if I should register for the entire term.  What are my options?
  11. When is registration for the Fall Term?
  12. How do I register?
  13. Why do I, as a parent/guardian, have to come in for my appointment if the office already has all of my current information?
  14. Can I register at another time or can I just call in, email or send my registration form by post and send my child in with a check on his/her first day of classes?
  15. My question wasn’t listed above, where can I get an answer?

Answers:

How important is it for me to continue taking class over the summer?

Extremely important!  Either you use it or you lose it.  Most dance teachers would agree that taking as little as one month off from dance can set a dancer back an entire year.  Practicing at home will not take the place of class either.  If you are practicing only what you already know, then you are not actually improving.  Not to mention you may accidentally be practicing incorrectly and inadvertently create bad technical habits that will set you back even farther when you do return to class.

If I take advantage of the classes offered at Mercyhurst, who do I write my check to?

All of the upper division Intermediate II/Advanced level programming will be offered through, and paid to Mercyhurst College Dance Department except the Repertoire class.  Although it is held at the Mercyhurst DanceSpace on MWF 12:30-1:30, this class is offered through LEB for the three (3) weeks of June and/or the three (3) weeks of August.  Dancers who enroll in June will learn a piece set by former LEB dancer, Abigail Henninger.  Dancers who enroll in August will learn a piece set by LEB School Director, Kirsten Carpenter.  The cost is $69 per three (3) week session, payable to LEB.

I am planning to take the Ballet and Modern classes offered to me every MWF during June and then again in August for the low cost of $135 per three (3) week session.  What are my options for the month of July?

For those students not wishing to take advantage of the two (2) or four (4) week intensives during July, students may continue to take the Ballet and Modern classes every morning by purchasing class cards.  Intensives do not usually allow drop-in students to study with their master teachers, so we at LEB highly recommend that students make every effort to continue attending class during July’s intensive.  You may also attend afternoon classes at LEB with the lower student levels.

I am currently enrolled in Intermediate I, can I take advantage of the classes at Mercyhurst?

No.  These classes will be taught at the Advanced level and will already be difficult for our Intermediate II students.  Any students that are not able to keep up with the class level at Mercyhurst will be asked to find alternate programming.  LEB will be offering classes Tuesday through Thursday for Intermediate I and II students that will still push the students to progress their abilities without making them feel incapable of keeping up.

I am currently enrolled in Intermediate II, do I have to take the classes at Mercyhurst?

See answer to question #4.

Do I need to register for classes offered at LEB for the summer if I am already a student?

Yes.  As of May 18th, all student accounts will essentially be erased.  Students must call or come in to indicate which classes they will be registering for so that we can keep accurate tuition accounts.

When do I register and pay tuition?

Students should register for Summer Term by the end of May.  It is is not necessary students register for the entire 10 week term to particip[ate in the Summer Term.  Class cards are available for those students who plan to attend intermittently throughout the summer.  Tuition may vary according to availablity.  Please call the LEB office to determine the options for your student and terms of payment.  Tuition for the summer program must be paid by the 10th of each month.  A 5% discount is available for students who pay for the entire 10 week term in full.  LEB will not allow students to participate in class with their accounts showing a balance due.  NO EXCEPTIONS!

When will I receive my level placement letter?

Official level placement letters will be going out to students in August.  However, students who register for the summer programming may receive either oral or early written communication as to which level classes they should be signing up for if it differs from their current level.

I have been in Pre-Pointe for at least one year and I am at least 11 years old.  Will I receive a Pointe letter?

Perhaps.  Some students that have displayed the proper strength, alignment, and dedication may receive a letter informing them of their readiness for pointe work at the end of May.  It is recommended that all new pointe students enroll in the Wednesday 4:00 Pre-Pointe class or arrange for private lessons with an LEB instructor.

I will be in and out of town during the summer and do not know if I should register for the entire term.  What are my options?

You may sign up and pay for just one month at a time or you may buy a class card to allow for more scheduling flexibility.  If you are not registered and paying for at least one class a month, you are considered a Non-Student and must pay the full class card rate.

When is registration for the Fall Term?

Fall Term Registration is the week of August 24-29, 2009 between 11:00am and 5:00 pm.  Appointment times before 11 or after 5 will be made as needed.

          How do I register?

Fall Registration is by appointment only.   It is imperative that every parent/guardian come into the office for a 15 to 25 minute visit during the week of registration.   All appointments should be made with School Director, Kirsten Carpenter, by calling 814-871-4356 ext.101.

Why do I, as a parent/guardian, have to come in for my appointment if the office already has all of my current information?

Due to the nature of this business, it is important that parents meet with the LEB Directors to discuss the progress and pursuits of your dancer(s).  Being “on the same page,” so to speak, at the beginning of the season, will undoubtedly benefit your dancer(s) throughout the year.  This is also the time to set up your dancer’s weekly schedule as well as to pay your annual $10 Registration fee and the first month’s or first term’s tuition fees.

Can I register at another time or can I just call in, email or send my registration form by post and send my child in with a check on his/her first day of classes?

You must make an appointment to come in to the office to register at least one day before your child’s first class.  Any child that shows up to class without having been officially registered, check or no check, will not be permitted to participate in that class.  You may also find that the “early bird got the worm” and the class you intended to register your child for may be full!

My question wasn’t listed above, where can I get an answer?

Many questions can be answered by calling School Director, Kirsten Carpenter at 871-4356 x101 or via email, lebs@lakeerieballet.org.
